Sunan Abi Dawud 4499 (Book 41, Hadith 6) #24790
Forgiveness in the Face of Adversity

SUMMARY: The Prophet asked a murderer's legal guardian if he would forgive the murderer, and after repeating this question four times, the guardian eventually forgave him.

Narrated Wa'il ibn Hujr: I was with the Prophet when a man who was a murderer and had a strap round his neck was brought to him. He then called the legal guardian of the victim and asked him: Do you forgive him? He said: #He asked: Will you accept the blood-money? He said: #He asked: Will you kill him? He said: Yes. He said: Take him. When he turned his back, he said: Do you forgive him? He said: #He said: Will you accept the blood-money? He said: #He said: Will you kill him? He said: Yes. He said: Take him. After repeating all this a fourth time, he said: If you forgive him, he will bear the burden of his own sin and the sin of the victim. He then forgave him. He (the narrator) said: I saw him pulling the strap.

QUICK LESSONS:
Try to be forgiving towards others even when it may seem difficult or impossible to do so .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about forgiveness and mercy in the face of adversity. It tells us that even when faced with a difficult situation, we should still strive to be forgiving and merciful towards others. The Prophet asked a man who was accused of murder if his legal guardian would forgive him, and after asking this question four times, the guardian eventually forgave him. This teaches us that we should always try to be forgiving towards others even when it may seem difficult or impossible to do so. We should also remember that justice must still be served; in this case, although the man was forgiven by his victim's legal guardian, he still had to bear the burden of his own sin as well as that of his victim's sin. This hadith reminds us that justice must always prevail while also teaching us about mercy and forgiveness in difficult situations.
