Sticking with What You Know

SUMMARY: Ibn Mas'ud was taught to read a verse in a certain way and he chose to stick with it even though others suggested an alternative.

Narrated Shariq: Ibn Mas'ud said read the verse: "Now come, thou" (Haita laka). Then Shariq said: We read it, "hi'tu laka" (I am prepared for thee). Ibn Mas'ud said: I read it as I have been taught ; it is dearer to me.

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, Shariq narrates that Ibn Mas'ud was asked to read a verse from the Quran. He read it as he had been taught and refused to change his reading even when someone else suggested an alternative. This teaches us that we should be confident in our knowledge and not be swayed by other people's opinions if we are sure of what we know. We should also strive to learn more so that we can become more knowledgeable about different topics. Additionally, this hadith shows us the importance of being prepared for any situation or task at hand; Ibn Mas’ud was prepared for the task of reading the verse correctly as he had been taught before-hand.
