Fulfilling Vows and the Will of Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) advised Uqbah ibn Amir al-Juhani that Allah will not require his sister to fulfill her vow of walking to the Ka'bah.

Narrated Uqbah ibn Amir al-Juhani: Uqbah said to the Prophet : My sister has taken a vow that she will walk to the House of Allah (the Ka'bah). Thereupon he said: Allah will not do anything of the walking of your sister to the House of Allah (ie the Ka'bah).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be careful when making a pledge or promise; Respectfully accept what pleases Allah; Trust in God’s wisdom over our own judgement.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fulfilling vows and understanding the will of Allah. Uqbah ibn Amir al-Juhani asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about his sister's vow to walk to the House of God, also known as Al-Ka’ba. The Prophet ﷺ replied that Allah would not require her to fulfill this vow, as it was too difficult for her. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful when making a pledge or promise, because if it is too difficult for us then we should not make it in the first place. We must also remember that ultimately, only what is pleasing in the eyes of Allah matters and He knows best what is best for us.
