Buying on Credit with Collateral

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) bought foodstuff from a Jew on credit and used his armor as collateral.

Narrated 'Aisha: Allah's Messenger bought some foodstuff (barley) from a Jew on credit and mortgaged his iron armor to him (the armor stands for a guarantor).

QUICK LESSONS:
Buy things on credit responsibly and ensure you can pay back your debt in due time. Use something valuable as collateral if needed. Be honest and trustworthy when taking out loans or making financial transactions with others.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of buying foodstuff from a Jew on credit and mortgaging his iron armor to him as collateral. This shows us that it is permissible to buy things on credit, but one must ensure that they are able to pay back the debt in due time. It also teaches us that if we are unable to pay back our debts, we can use something valuable as collateral in order to secure the loan. In this case, the Prophet Muhammad used his iron armor as collateral for the loan he took out from the Jew. This hadith also teaches us about honesty and trustworthiness; even though he was taking out a loan, he still kept his word and paid back what he owed when it was due.
