Mortgaging in Salam

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) bought foodstuff from a Jew on credit and mortgaged his iron armor as payment.

Narrated Al-A'mash: We argued at Ibrahim's dwelling place about mortgaging in Salam. He said, "Aisha said, 'The Prophet bought some foodstuff from a Jew on credit and the payment was to be made by a definite period, and he mortgaged his iron armor to him".

QUICK LESSONS:
Use possessions as collateral for loans with mutual consent between both parties involved and all terms are agreed upon beforehand . Help others out first before taking care of yourself .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ practice of mortgaging in salam. It is narrated by Al-A'mash that there was an argument at Ibrahim's dwelling place about mortgaging in salam. He then said that Aisha reported that the Prophet ﷺ bought some foodstuff from a Jew on credit and he mortgaged his iron armor to him as payment for the goods. This hadith teaches us that it is permissible to use one's possessions as collateral for a loan, so long as it is done with mutual consent between both parties involved and all terms are agreed upon beforehand. It also shows us how generous and kind the Prophet ﷺ was, even when he himself was in need of something, he still chose to help others out first before taking care of himself.
