The Prohibition of Selling Dates and Silver on Credit

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade the sale of dates until they were ripe and could be estimated, as well as the sale of silver for gold on credit.

Narrated Abu Al-Bakhtari: I asked Ibn 'Umar about Salam (the fruits of) date-palms. He replied, "The Prophet forbade the sale of dates till their benefit becomes evident and fit for eating and also the sale of silver (for gold) on credit". I asked Ibn 'Abbas about Salam for dates and he replied, "The Prophet forbade the sale of dates till they were fit for eating and could be estimated".

QUICK LESSONS:
Engage only in beneficial transactions

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of selling dates and silver on credit. It was narrated by Abu Al-Bakhtari who asked Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbas about Salam for dates. They both replied that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade the sale of dates until they were fit for eating and could be estimated, as well as the sale of silver for gold on credit. This hadith teaches us to not engage in any transactions that are not beneficial or profitable to us, such as selling something before it is ready or exchanging something with a higher value than what we are receiving in return. We should also avoid taking loans from others without being able to pay them back in a timely manner.
