Sunan Abi Dawud 794 (Book 2, Hadith 404) #21085
Consideration in Prayer

SUMMARY: When leading a prayer, one should be brief and considerate of those who are weak, sick or elderly. However, when praying alone one can pray for as long as they like.

Abu Hurairah reported the prophet as saying: When one of you leads the people in prayer, he should be brief, for among them are the weak, the sick, and the aged. But when one of you prays by himself, he may pray as long as he likes.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be considerate while leading prayers
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of being considerate when leading a prayer. We should be mindful that there may be people present who are weak, sick or elderly and therefore cannot keep up with a lengthy prayer. However, when we are praying alone we can take our time and pray for as long as we like. This hadith also encourages us to think about others before ourselves and to show kindness even in small ways such as shortening our prayers so that everyone can participate comfortably.
