The Prohibition of Silk

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) forbidding the use of silk.

It was narrated that 'Ali Al-Bariqi said: "A woman came to me to ask a question, and I said to her: 'There is Ibn 'Umar'. So she went after him to ask him, and I went after her to hear what he would say. She said: 'Tell me about silk'. He said: 'The Messenger of Allah SAW forbade it'."
أَخْبَرَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ، سَنَةَ سَبْعٍ وَمِائَتَيْنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الصَّعْقُ بْنُ حَزْنٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ الْبَارِقِيِّ، قَالَ أَتَتْنِي امْرَأَةٌ تَسْتَفْتِينِي فَقُلْتُ لَهَا هَذَا ابْنُ عُمَرَ ‏.‏ فَاتَّبَعَتْهُ تَسْأَلُهُ وَاتَّبَعْتُهَا أَسْمَعُ مَا يَقُولُ ‏.‏ قَالَتْ أَفْتِنِي فِي الْحَرِيرِ ‏.‏ قَالَ نَهَى عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

This hadith is about a woman who asked 'Ali Al-Bariqi a question regarding silk. He then directed her to Ibn 'Umar who told her that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) forbade it. This hadith teaches us that we should obey and follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). We should not do anything that he has forbidden us from doing as it is for our own benefit and protection. We must also be respectful to those around us and seek knowledge from them if we are unsure about something.
