Sahih al-Bukhari 2054 (Book 34, Hadith 8) #1971
Hunting with Respect to Allah

SUMMARY: When hunting, one should only eat the game if it is killed by the sharp edge of a weapon and not by its broad side. If two dogs are involved in the hunt, one should not eat the game if they have not mentioned Allah's name on both dogs.

Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim: I asked Allah's Messenger about Al Mirad (ie a sharp-edged piece of wood or a piece of wood provided with a piece of iron used for hunting). He replied, "If the game is hit by its sharp edge, eat it, and if it is hit by its broad side, do not eat it, for it has been beaten to death". I asked, "O Allah's Messenger ! I release my dog by the name of Allah and find with it at the game, another dog on which I have not mentioned the name of Allah, and I do not know which one of them caught the game". Allah's Messenger said (to him), 'Don't eat it as you have mentioned the name of Allah on your dog and not on the other dog".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about hunting and how it should be done with respect to Allah. It teaches us that when hunting, we must only consume the game if it is killed by a sharp-edged weapon such as a spear or arrow. If two dogs are used in the hunt, then we must mention Allah's name on both of them before releasing them for hunting; otherwise, we cannot consume what they catch. This hadith also teaches us that animals should be treated humanely and with respect for their lives; killing an animal without any purpose is prohibited in Islam.
