Sahih al-Bukhari 2055 (Book 34, Hadith 9) #1972
Mindfulness of Charity

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to be mindful of charity and not take something that could have been given in charity.

Narrated Anas: The Prophet passed by a fallen date and said, "Were it not for my doubt that this might have been given in charity, I would have eaten it". And narrated Abu Huraira the Prophet said, "I found a date-fruit fallen on my bed".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous and kind towards other people; Think twice before taking something which may belong to someone else; Consider whether or not what you are about to take has been left out with the intention to give away in charity; Respect other people's belongings even if they are seemingly insignificant items like a fallen date-fruit.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of being mindful of charity. The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by a fallen date and said, "Were it not for my doubt that this might have been given in charity, I would have eaten it". He was aware that someone may have dropped the date-fruit with the intention to give it away as a form of charity. Similarly, when he found a date-fruit on his bed, he was aware that someone may have left it there as an act of kindness or generosity. This hadith reminds us to be mindful and considerate when we come across something that could potentially be given away as an act of charity or kindness. We should always think twice before taking something for ourselves if we are unsure whether or not it has been left for others out of generosity.
