Punishment for Theft According to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated that the hand of a thief should not be cut off unless the stolen item is worth at least one-third of a Dinar or half of Dinar.

It was narrated from 'Aishah that the Messenger of Allah said: "(The thief's hand) is not to be cut off except for the price of a shield, one-third of a Dinar or half of Dinar, or more".

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by 'Aishah states that the punishment for theft should not be cutting off the thief's hand unless the stolen item is worth at least one-third of a Dinar or half of a Dinar. This hadith teaches us that justice must be served and it also serves as an example to show how merciful and compassionate Prophet Muhammad was towards criminals. He did not want to punish them severely, but instead wanted them to learn from their mistakes and become better people in society. This hadith also shows us that we should always strive for justice, even if it means punishing someone who has committed wrongdoings.
