Punishment for Theft in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) cut off the hand of a thief for stealing a quarter of a Dinar.

It was narrated that Az-Zuhri said: "Amrah said, narrating from 'Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Messenger of Allah cut off the hand of a thief for a quarter of a Dinar".
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا حِبَّانُ بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ قَالَتْ عَمْرَةُ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، رضى الله عنها عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ تُقْطَعُ يَدُ السَّارِقِ فِي رُبُعِ دِينَارٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the punishment for theft in Islam. According to this hadith narrated by Az-Zuhri and Amrah from 'Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, the Messenger of Allah cut off the hand of a thief who stole a quarter of a Dinar. This punishment is meant to serve as an example to deter people from committing theft and other crimes in society.
