The Consequences of Keeping an Unnecessary Dog

SUMMARY: Keeping a pet dog that is not used for hunting, herding livestock or guarding land will result in a deduction of two Qirats from one's reward each day.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever keeps a dog that is not a dog used for hunting, herding livestock or guarding land, two Qirats will be deducted from his reward each day".
أَخْبَرَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَيَانٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لَيْسَ بِكَلْبِ صَيْدٍ وَلاَ مَاشِيَةٍ وَلاَ أَرْضٍ فَإِنَّهُ يَنْقُصُ مِنْ أَجْرِهِ قِيرَاطَانِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that keeping an unnecessary pet dog can have consequences. According to the Prophet Muhammad, if someone keeps a pet dog that is not used for hunting, herding livestock or guarding land, two Qirats will be deducted from his reward each day. A Qirat is a unit of measurement in Islamic tradition and it refers to the amount of good deeds one must do to enter Paradise.
