The Reward of Keeping a Pet Dog

SUMMARY: Keeping a pet dog, except for herding livestock, hunting or farming, will reduce one's reward.

It was narrated from Salim bin 'Abdullah that his father said: "The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for herding livestock or a dog for hunting, one Qirat will be deducted from his reward each day"'.Abdullah said: "Abu Hurairah said: 'Or a dog for farming'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep dogs only when necessary for work such as herding livestock or hunting .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the reward of keeping a pet dog. According to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, if someone keeps a pet dog that is not used for herding livestock, hunting or farming then their reward will be reduced by one Qirat each day. A Qirat is an amount of rewards that Allah gives to people who do good deeds and it is equal to the weight of Mount Uhud in gold. Therefore this hadith teaches us that we should only keep dogs if they are necessary for our work such as herding livestock or hunting and not just as pets because it can reduce our rewards from Allah ﷺ.
