The Consequences of Keeping a Dog

SUMMARY: Keeping a dog for any purpose other than hunting, farming or herding livestock will result in the deduction of one qirat from one's good deeds each day.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever keep s dog except a dog for hunting, farming or herding livestock, on e Qurat will be deducted from his good deeds each day".
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ كَلْبًا إِلاَّ كَلْبَ صَيْدٍ أَوْ زَرْعٍ أَوْ مَاشِيَةٍ نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of keeping a dog as a pet. According to this hadith, if someone keeps a dog for any purpose other than hunting, farming or herding livestock, then one qirat will be deducted from their good deeds each day. A qirat is an amount that is equal to half of what can fit in the valley of Makkah and it is considered to be very large. Therefore, this hadith serves as an important reminder that we should not keep dogs as pets because it can have negative consequences on our good deeds and our relationship with Allah SWT. We should only keep dogs for specific purposes such as hunting, farming or herding livestock.
