Pledging Not To Commit Sins

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad asked men to pledge to not associate anything with Allah, not steal, not have unlawful sexual relations, not utter slander and fabricate lies, and obey him in goodness. If they commit any of these actions after pledging and are punished for it then that will be an expiation. If they are not punished then their fate is up to Allah.

It was narrated from 'Ubadah bin As-Samit that the Messenger of Allah said: "Why don't you pledge to me upon that which the women have pledged: That you will not associate anything with Allah, that you will not steal, that you will not have unlawful sexual relations, that you will not utter slander, fabricating from between your hands and feet, and that you will not disobey me in goodness (Ma'ruf)?" We said: "yes, O Messenger of Allah". So we gave him our pledge, on that basis. The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever commits any of these actions after that, and is punished, that will be an expiation. Whoever is not punished, then his affair is up to Allah; if He wills, He will forgive him, and if He wills, He will punish him".

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey God's commands , avoid sins at all costs , seek punishment for wrongdoings .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad asked men to pledge that they would never associate anything with Allah, never steal, never have unlawful sexual relations, never utter slander or fabricate lies between their hands and feet. He also asked them to obey him in goodness. This hadith teaches us the importance of staying away from sins as much as possible and if we do commit a sin then we should seek punishment for it so that it can be an expiation for our wrongdoings. If we are not punished then our fate is up to Allah; He may forgive us or punish us depending on His will. We should always strive towards righteousness so that we can please Allah and gain His mercy in this life and the hereafter.
