Fairness and Equality in Parenting

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised a father to be fair and equal in his treatment of all his children.

It was narrated from An-Nu'man bin Bashir that his father Bashir bin Sa'd brought An-Nu'man with him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have given this son of mine a slave who belonged to me as a present". The Messenger of Allah said: "Have you given a present to all your children?" He said: "No". He said: "Then take (your present) back".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of fairness and equality when it comes to parenting. It was narrated from An-Nu'man bin Bashir that his father Bashir bin Sa'd brought An-Nu'man with him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have given this son of mine a slave who belonged to me as a present". The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked if he had given presents to all his children, which he hadn't. He then advised him to take the gift back so that he could be fair in treating all his children equally. This hadith teaches us that parents should not show favoritism towards any one child over another; rather they should strive for fairness and equality when it comes to their parenting style. Parents should also ensure that they provide their children with the same opportunities for growth, education, development, etc., regardless of gender or age differences between them. Furthermore, this hadith encourages parents to practice tarbiyyah or musawwamah - both terms refer to raising children with justice and balance - so as not only benefit their own family but also society at large by producing well-rounded individuals who are aware of their rights as well as those of others around them.
