Sunan an-Nasai 3669 (Book 30, Hadith 59) #18283
Protecting the Property of Orphans

SUMMARY: Allah revealed verses to protect the property of orphans and instructed Muslims to work honestly in their property.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "When these Verses were revealed - 'And come not near to the orphan's property, except to improve it,' and 'Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans' - the people avoided the property and food of the orphans. That caused hardship to the Muslims and they complained about that to the Prophet. Then Allah revealed: 'And they ask you concerning orphans. Say: The best thing is to work honestly in their property, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers. And Allah knows him who means mischief (eg to swallow their property) from him who means good (eg to save their property). And if Allah had wished, He could have put you into difficulties'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about protecting the rights and properties of orphans. It was narrated by Ibn 'Abbas that when certain verses were revealed which prohibited people from coming close to an orphan's wealth except for improving it and warned against those who unjustly consume an orphan's wealth, people began avoiding any contact with such properties out of fear. This caused hardship for Muslims as it made them unable to help or support these children in need. In response, Allah revealed another verse which instructed people on how they should deal with such situations; that is by working honestly in their properties and mixing their affairs with theirs so that they become like brothers. Furthermore, Allah reminded us that He knows those who mean mischief from those who mean good and if He wished He could have put us into difficulties instead. This hadith teaches us about being kind towards orphans and taking care of them without exploiting them or taking advantage of them due to their vulnerable state. We must also remember that we are accountable for our actions before God so we must be honest when dealing with others' possessions especially when it comes to children as God will judge us accordingly based on our intentions behind our deeds whether good or bad.
