Taking Care of Orphans

SUMMARY: It is permissible to mix with the property of an orphan if you are taking care of them.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said -concerning the Verse: "Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans" -A man would have an orphan in his care, and he would keep his food, drink and vessels separate. This caused hardship to the Muslims, so Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed: "And they ask you concerning orphans. Say: The best thing is to work honestly in their property, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers" (in religion), so it is permissible for you to mix with them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of taking care of orphans and their property. Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed that it is permissible for those who take care of orphans to mix with their property. This means that they can use it as they would use their own property, but in a responsible manner. The hadith also teaches us to be honest when dealing with an orphan's property and not to take advantage or misuse it in any way. We should also remember that those who take care of orphans are like brothers in religion and should treat them as such.
