Sunan an-Nasai 3516 (Book 27, Hadith 128) #18128
Marriage Advice from the Prophet

SUMMARY: A woman from Aslam was married to her husband, who died while she was pregnant. She refused a proposal from Abu As-Sanabil bin Ba'kak and went to the Prophet for advice. The Prophet told her to get married.

It was narrated from Abu Salamah bin 'Abdur-Rahman that Zainab bint Abi Salamah told him, from her mother, Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet: "That a woman from Aslam who was called Subai'ah was married to her husband, and he died while she was pregnant. Abu As-Sanabil bin Ba'kak proposed to her but she refused to marry him. He said: 'You cannot get married until you have observed 'Iddah for the longer of the two periods'. Approximately twenty days later she gave birth. She went to the Messenger of Allah and he said: 'Get married'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek guidance when unsure about something or need advice on how best proceed in life matters such as marriage or divorce; Use your right of seeking counsel from religious scholars when you need help making decisions regarding your life and future; Get married if advised by the Messenger of Allah .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman who was married and then widowed while pregnant. She received a proposal of marriage but refused it because she thought that she had to observe 'Iddah for two periods before getting remarried. She then went to the Messenger of Allah for advice and he told her that she could get remarried right away without having to wait any longer. This hadith teaches us that it is permissible for widows who are pregnant with their deceased husband's child to remarry without having to wait two periods of 'Iddah first. It also teaches us that we should seek guidance from Allah's Messenger when we are unsure about something or need advice on how best to proceed in life matters such as marriage or divorce. Furthermore, this hadith shows us how important it is for women in particular not only have access but also be able use their right of seeking counsel from religious scholars when they need help making decisions regarding their lives and futures.
