'Iddah Period for Widows Who Give Birth

SUMMARY: The hadith explains the 'Iddah period for a woman who gives birth after her husband dies.

Abu Salamah bin 'Abdur-Rahman said: "Ibn 'Abbas, Abu Hurairah and I were together, and Ibn 'Abbas said: 'If a woman gives birth after her husband dies, her 'Iddah is the longer of the two periods'." Abu Salamah said: "We sent Kuraib to Umm Salamah to ask her about that. He came to us and told us from her that the husband of Subai'ah died and she gave birth a few days after her husband died, and the Messenger of Allah told her to get married".

QUICK LESSONS:
Abide by Islamic rulings , Seek guidance from those more knowledgeable than us in matters related to religion

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the ruling on the ‘idda period for a widow who gives birth after her husband has passed away. According to this hadith, if a woman gives birth after her husband dies, then she must observe an ‘idda period that is equal to or longer than the usual prescribed time frame. This ruling was given by Ibn Abbas and Abu Huraira in the presence of Abu Salamam bin Abdur Rahman and was later confirmed by Umm Salamam when they asked her about it. The Prophet Muhammad also instructed Subai’a to get married again once she completed her ‘idda period. This hadith teaches us that even in difficult times such as widowhood, we should still abide by Islamic rulings and seek guidance from those more knowledgeable than us in matters related to religion.
