Sunan an-Nasai 3517 (Book 27, Hadith 129) #18129
Waiting Period After Husband's Death

SUMMARY: A woman came to Ibn Abbas asking about the waiting period for her after her husband's death, and he told her to wait for the longer of two periods. The Prophet also gave similar advice when a similar situation was presented to him.

Abu Salamah bin 'Abdur-Rahman said: "While Abu Hurairah and I were with Ibn 'Abbas, a woman came and said that her husband had died while she was pregnant, then she had given birth less than four months after the day he died. Ibn 'Abbas said: '(You have to wait) for the longer of the two periods'." Abu Salamah said: "A man from among the Companions of the Prophet told me that Subai'ah Al-Aslamiyyah came to the Messenger of Allah and said that her husband died while she was pregnant, and she gave birth less than four months after he died. The Messenger of Allah told her to get married. Abu Hurairah said: 'And I bear witness to that'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek knowledge from reliable sources; Honor one’s obligations as a Muslim believer; Observe one’s waiting period before remarrying; Ensure any children born are attributed correctly and not confused with another man’s offspring .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the waiting period that a widow must observe after her husband has passed away. According to Ibn Abbas, if a woman is pregnant at the time of her husband's death, she must wait until either four months have passed or until she gives birth, whichever is longer. The Prophet also gave similar advice when Subai'ah Al Aslamiyyah came to him with this same question. This hadith teaches us that it is important for widows to observe their waiting period before remarrying in order to ensure that any children born are attributed correctly and not confused with another man's offspring. It also shows us how important it is for people in need of guidance on religious matters to seek out knowledgeable people who can provide them with accurate information based on Islamic teachings.
