Fulfilling Obligations to Allah

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of fulfilling one's obligations to Allah, even if it is after death.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah! My father has died and he did not perform Hajj; shall I perform Hajj on his behalf?' He said: 'Don't you think that if your father owed a debt you would pay it off?' The man said: 'Yes'. He said: 'The debt owed to Allah is more deserving (of being paid off)"'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of fulfilling one's obligations to Allah, even if it is after death. It was narrated by Ibn 'Abbas that a man asked the Prophet Muhammad whether he could perform Hajj on behalf of his deceased father who did not do so himself. The Prophet replied by asking him if he would pay off a debt owed by his father and when the man said yes, he said that paying off debts owed to Allah was more deserving than any other debt. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to fulfill our obligations and duties towards Allah, no matter what our circumstances are or how much time has passed since they were due. We should also remember that all debts owed to Him are more important than any other debt and must be paid off as soon as possible in order for us to be successful in this life and in the hereafter.
