Sunan an-Nasai 2640 (Book 24, Hadith 22) #17251
Performing Hajj on Behalf of an Elderly Parent

SUMMARY: A man asked the Prophet if he could perform Hajj on behalf of his elderly father, and the Prophet said yes, as it would be like paying off a debt.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas that: a man asked the Prophet "The command of ) Hajj has come while my father is an old man and cannot sit firmly in his saddle; if I tie him (to the saddle) I fear that he will die. Can I perform Hajj on his behalf?" He said: "don't you think that if your father owed a debt and you paid it off, that would be good enough?" He said: "Yes". He said: "Then perform Hajj on behalf of your father".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take care of your parents even when they are old and unable to do things themselves; fulfill their religious obligations for them whenever possible; repay debts as commanded by Allah in many verses in the Quran .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith speaks about performing Hajj on behalf of an elderly parent. It is narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas that a man asked the Prophet if he could perform Hajj on behalf of his elderly father who was unable to sit firmly in his saddle. The Prophet replied by asking him if he would pay off a debt for his father, to which the man answered yes. The Prophet then said that performing Hajj on behalf of one's elderly parent is similar to paying off their debt. This hadith teaches us that we should take care of our parents even when they are old and unable to do things themselves, and that we should fulfill their religious obligations for them whenever possible. We can also learn from this hadith that taking care of our parents is similar to repaying a debt - something which Allah has commanded us to do in many verses in the Quran.
