Sunan an-Nasai 2638 (Book 24, Hadith 20) #17249
Performing Hajj on Behalf of an Elderly Parent

SUMMARY: A man asked the Prophet if he could perform Hajj on behalf of his elderly father, and the Prophet said yes.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Az-Zubair said: "A man from Khath'am came to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'My father is an old man who cannot ride, and the command of Allah to perform Hajj has come. Will it be good enough if I perform Hajj on his behalf?' He said: 'Are you the oldest of his children?' He said: 'Yes'. He said: 'Don't you think that if he owed a debt you would pay it off?, He' said: 'Yes'. He said: 'then perform Hajj on his behalf'.''(Daif)

QUICK LESSONS:
Take religious obligations seriously; Prioritize parents’ needs; Fulfill responsibilities; Respect elders

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who asked the Prophet Muhammad if it would be acceptable for him to perform Hajj on behalf of his elderly father. The Prophet responded by asking him if he was the oldest child in his family and then reminded him that if his father owed a debt he would pay it off. The implication being that since performing Hajj is an obligation upon every Muslim adult, then it should be taken as seriously as any other debt or responsibility. This hadith teaches us that we should take our religious obligations seriously and not neglect them even when faced with difficult circumstances such as having an elderly parent who cannot physically make the journey to Mecca themselves. It also reminds us to prioritize our parents’ needs over our own desires and wishes.
