Fasting in Ramadan - Encouragement of Choice

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) fasted until he reached Usfan and then drank from a cup. He also encouraged people to fast or break their fast according to their own will.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Messenger of Allah went out to Makkah, and he fasted until he came to Usfan. Then he called for a cup and drank". (One of the narrators) Shubah said: "(That was) in Ramadan. Ibn 'Abbas used to say: 'Whoever wants to fast, may fast, and whoever wants to break may break his fast"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Make decisions based on your own judgement & conscience.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's journey to Makkah and his fasting during the month of Ramadan. When he arrived at Usfan, he called for a cup and drank from it. This indicates that although fasting is an important part of Ramadan, it is not compulsory for everyone to do so; rather, people are free to choose whether they want to fast or not. The Prophet's encouragement of choice shows that Islam values individual autonomy and encourages people to make decisions based on their own judgement and conscience.
