Breaking the Fast While Travelling

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad fasted while travelling until he reached a certain destination, where he then broke his fast with a cup of milk.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that: the Messenger of Allah fasted while traveling until he reached Qudaid, then he called for a cup of milk and drank and broke his fast; he and his Companions.

QUICK LESSONS:
Observe fasting while travelling unless necessary
EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad was known to be an example for all Muslims to follow. This hadith shows us that even when travelling, it is important to observe fasting and not break it unless necessary. When the Prophet reached Qudaid, he called for a cup of milk and drank it, breaking his fast along with his companions. This teaches us that if we are in need of sustenance while travelling, we should not hesitate to take what is necessary in order to continue our journey without any difficulty or hardship. It also shows us that even though fasting is important during Ramadan and other times throughout the year, there are exceptions when one may break their fast due to necessity or travel.
