Sunan an-Nasai 2174 (Book 22, Hadith 85) #16785
Fasting Before the Start of a Month

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad advised against fasting one or two days before the start of a month, unless it is a day that someone habitually fasts.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "The messenger of Allah said: 'Do not fast one or two days ahead of the month, unless that happens to be a day that one of you habitually fasts"'. Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasai) said: This is a mistake'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow routine practices when fasting .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad taught us about fasting in this hadith. He said we should not fast one or two days before the start of each month, unless it is something we do regularly. This means if someone has made it part of their routine to fast on certain days, they can continue doing so even if those days are close to the beginning of a new month. However, if someone does not usually fast on those particular days then they should avoid doing so as it is not recommended by the Prophet Muhammad. This hadith teaches us about moderation and balance in our religious practices; we should neither overdo nor neglect them but rather find an appropriate middle ground between both extremes.
