Visiting the Sick: An Example of Compassion

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Abu Bakr visited Jabir when he was sick and the Prophet (PBUH) performed wudu and poured the water over him.

Ibn Al-Munkadir said: "I heard Jabir say: 'I fell sick, and the Messenger of Allah and Abu Bakr came to visit me. They found me unconscious, so the Messenger of Allah performed Wudu' and poured his Wudu' water over me'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be compassionate towards those who are ill or suffering; Perform religious duties even if it may not seem necessary at first glance; Help others in need.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about an example of compassion shown by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companion Abu Bakr. They visited their friend Jabir when he was sick and unconscious. The Prophet ﷺ then performed wudu’ which is a ritual washing before prayer in Islam, and poured some of that water over Jabir to help him recover from his illness. This hadith teaches us that we should be compassionate towards those who are ill or suffering in any way, as this is what our beloved prophet did for his companions. We should also take care to perform our religious duties even if it may not seem necessary at first glance; in this case performing wudu’ even though it would not have been done for prayer purposes but rather to help a friend in need.
