Sahih Muslim 1456b (Book 17, Hadith 42) #10746
Commandment to Not Take Captives

SUMMARY: Allah's Apostle sent a small army and commanded them to not take any captives except what their right hands possess.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah's Apostle sent a small army. The rest of the hadith is the same except this that he said: Except what your right hands possess out of them are lawful for you; and he did not mention" when their 'idda period comes to an end".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow instructions from leaders, obey Islamic laws even during times of war or conflict, treat prisoners with respect and kindness .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the commandment given by Allah's Apostle to a small army. He instructed them not to take any captives except what their right hands possess. This means that they were only allowed to keep captives if they had taken them in battle, and not otherwise. The Prophet also did not mention anything about when the 'idda period of these captives comes to an end, which implies that it was up to the discretion of the army as long as they followed other Islamic laws regarding prisoners of war. This hadith teaches us that we should always follow instructions from our leaders and obey Islamic laws even in times of war or conflict. It also teaches us that we should treat prisoners of war with respect and kindness, as this is part of our faith as Muslims.
