Sahih Muslim 1201d (Book 15, Hadith 90) #10025
Compensating for Troubles with Fasting, Alms and Sacrifice

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) advised Ka'b b. 'Ujra to shave his head when he was troubled by lice, and this verse was revealed in connection with him. He suggested that Ka'b should observe fast for three days, give alms or offer a sacrifice as compensation.

Ka'b b. 'Ujra (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be, upon him) stood near him and lice were falling from his head. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Do these vermins trouble you? I said: Yes. Thereupon he said: Then shave your head; and it was in connection with me that this verse was revealed:" Whoever among you is sick or has an ailment of the head, he (may effect) a compensation by fasting or alms or a sacrifice". He (the Holy Prophet, therefore) said to me: Observe fast for three days or give a quantity of alms enough to feed six needy persons or offer sacrifice (of an animal) that is available.

QUICK LESSONS:
Observe fast for three days or give a quantity of alms enough to feed six needy persons or offer sacrifice (of an animal).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's advice to Ka'b b. 'Ujra when he was troubled by lice falling from his head. The Prophet suggested that he should shave his head and compensate for it by fasting for three days, giving alms or offering a sacrifice of an animal available to him. This hadith teaches us the importance of compensating for our troubles through acts of worship such as fasting, giving charity or sacrificing animals in order to please Allah SWT and gain His blessings in return. It also shows us how merciful the Prophet Muhammad PBUH was towards others; even though shaving one's head is not obligatory upon Muslims, the Prophet still advised Ka'b to do so out of mercy and kindness towards him so that he could be relieved from his suffering due to lice infestation on his scalp.
