Sahih Muslim 1126c (Book 13, Hadith 150) #9789
Fasting on the Day of Ashura

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged people to fast on the day of Ashura, but also allowed them to choose whether or not they wanted to fast.

Ibn 'Umar (Allah be pleased with them) said that the day of 'Ashura was mentioned before the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him). Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, said: That was a day on which the people of pre-Islamic days used to observe fast. So he who amongst you likes to observe fast should do so, and he who does not like it should abandon it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Observe fast if you like or abandon it if you don't like it .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith is about fasting on the day of Ashura. This was a practice that was done by people before Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged his followers to continue this tradition if they wished. He also made it clear that if someone did not want to fast, then they were free to do so as well. This hadith teaches us that we should respect traditions from before Islam and follow them if we wish, but we are also free to make our own decisions in matters such as this one. It is important for us to remember that even though some things may have been done in pre-Islamic times, it does not mean that we must do them too; rather, we should use our own judgement and decide what is best for ourselves according to Islamic teachings.
