Abdullah b. 'Umar (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about the day of Ashura: It is a day on which the people of pre-Islamic days observed fast. So he who liked to fast on this day should do so, and he who liked to abandon it should abandon it'.Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him) did not observe fast except when it coincided (with the days when he was in the habit of observing voluntary fasts during every month).
The values taught by this hadith are patience, self-control and moderation in religious practices as well as respect for other's choices even if they differ from our own beliefs or practices. It also teaches us that we should strive towards spiritual growth while being mindful of our physical limitations at the same time.
The lesson for kids here is that they should be respectful towards others' beliefs even if they don't agree with them and practice moderation when observing religious rituals like fasting or praying etc., so that their physical health does not suffer due to over-exertion or extreme practices which can lead to exhaustion or illness over time if done excessively without taking breaks in between regularly scheduled activities like prayer times etc..
