Sahih Muslim 1091b (Book 13, Hadith 41) #9680
Understanding the Verse of Fasting

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how the Muslims were able to understand the verse of Quran regarding fasting and distinguish between night and day.

Sahl b. Sa'd (Allah be pleased with him) said: When this verse was revealed". Eat and drink till the white streak becomes distinct from the dark streak for you," the person who decided to observe fast tied on one of his feet a black thread and on the other a white thread. And he went on eating and drinking till he could distinguish (between their colour) on seeing them. It was after this that Allah reveal- ed (the words): min al-fajr. And they (the Muslims) came to know that (the word khait) refers to the night and day.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be patient when trying to understand something difficult from the Quran as well as being creative in finding solutions for our problems .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about understanding a verse in the Quran that talks about fasting. The verse states that one should eat and drink until they can distinguish between a white streak from a dark streak, which is usually seen at dawn or sunrise. To understand this better, one person tied a black thread on one foot and a white thread on another foot so he could tell when it was time to stop eating and drinking for his fast. After this, Allah revealed more words in the same verse which clarified that khait refers to night and day, meaning that people should stop eating at dawn or sunrise until sunset or nightfall for their fasts. This hadith teaches us to be patient when trying to understand something difficult from the Quran as well as being creative in finding solutions for our problems.
