Sahih Muslim 1042a (Book 12, Hadith 137) #9536
Working Harder than Begging

SUMMARY: It is better to work and provide for oneself than to beg from others, and it is important to start with taking care of one's dependents first.

Abu Huraira is reported to have heard the Messenger of Allah as saying: It is better for one among you to bring a load of firewood on his back and give charity out of it (and satisfy his own need) and be independent of people, than that he should beg from people, whether they give him anything or refuse him. Verily the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin (charity) with your dependents.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith encourages people to work hard and provide for themselves instead of begging from others. It also emphasizes the importance of taking care of one's dependents first before giving charity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that it is better to have an upper hand, meaning having something in your possession, rather than a lower hand which means being dependent on someone else. This hadith teaches us the importance of working hard and being independent while also reminding us that we should take care of our family members before helping others in need.
