Sahih Muslim 1025b (Book 12, Hadith 106) #9505
Sharing Rewards for Generosity

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who was punished for giving away food to a poor person without permission, but the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that both the giver and receiver should be rewarded.

'Umair, the freed slave of Abi'l-Lahm, said: My master commanded me to cut some meat in strips; (as I was doing it) a poor man came to me and I gave him some of it to eat. My master came to know of that, and he beat me. I came to the Messenger of Allah and narrated it to him. He (the Holy Prophet) summoned him and said: Why did you beat him? He (Abi'l-Lahm) said: He gives away my food without being commanded to do so. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: The reward would be shared by you two.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity generously; Help those in need; Treat others with compassion; Do good deeds without expecting anything in return; Share rewards with others who help you do good deeds.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about an incident where 'Umair, a freed slave of Abi'l-Lahm, gave some meat to a poor person without his master's permission. His master then beat him for it. When he narrated this incident to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he said that both the giver and receiver should be rewarded. This teaches us that generosity is highly valued in Islam and those who give charity will receive rewards from Allah SWT. It also shows us how important it is to help those in need as we are all part of one community and have an obligation towards each other. Furthermore, it teaches us not to punish people for doing good deeds as this could discourage them from helping others in future.
