Sahih Muslim 920a (Book 11, Hadith 8) #9278
Supplicating for Good Upon Death

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the death of Abu Salama and how the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught his family to only supplicate for good things.

Umm Salama reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon came to Abu Salama (as he died). His eyes were fixedly open. He closed them, and then said: When the soul is taken away the sight follows it. Some of the people of his family wept and wailed. So he said: Do not supplicate for yourselves anything but good, for angels say" Amen" to what you say. He then said: O Allah, forgive Abu Salama, raise his degree among those who are rightly guided, grant him a successor in his descendants who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the Universe, and make his grave spacious, and grant him light in it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Pray/Supplicate/Ask God For Mercy & Goodness Upon Someone's Passing Away .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the death of Abu Salama, a companion of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. When he died, his eyes were open and so the Prophet closed them and said that when a soul is taken away, its sight follows it. Some people in his family wept and wailed but then he taught them to only supplicate for good things as angels will say "Amen" to whatever they say. He then prayed for Abu Salama's forgiveness from Allah, that He may raise his degree among those who are rightly guided, grant him a successor in his descendants who remain and make his grave spacious with light in it. This hadith teaches us that when someone dies we should not grieve too much but instead pray for their forgiveness from Allah and ask Him to grant them mercy in their grave. We should also remember that whatever we supplicate or ask Allah for will be answered by angels saying "Amen".
