Sahih Muslim 919 (Book 11, Hadith 7) #9277
Supplicating for Good at Sickness and Death

SUMMARY: When visiting the sick or dead, supplicate for good and Allah will give you a better substitute.

Umm Salama reported Allah's Messenger as saying: Whenever you visit the sick or the dead, supplicate for good because angels say" Amen" to whatever you say. She added: When Abu Salama died, I went to the Messenger of Allah and said: Messenger of Allah, Abu Salama has died. He told me to recite:" O Allah! forgive me and him (Abu Salama) and give me a better substitute than he". So I said (this), and Allah gave me in exchange Muhammad, who is better for me than him (Abu Salama).

QUICK LESSONS:
Make supplication when visiting those who are sick or have died .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of supplicating for good when visiting those who are sick or have passed away. Umm Salama reported that the Prophet Muhammad said that whenever someone visits a person who is ill or has died, they should make supplication to God because angels will say "Amen" to whatever they say. Umm Salama also shared her own experience of when her husband Abu Salama passed away, she went to the Prophet Muhammad and he told her to recite a prayer asking God for forgiveness and a better substitute than Abu Salama. She did this prayer and was blessed with Muhammad as her new husband which was much better than Abu Salama. This hadith teaches us that we should always be grateful in times of difficulty because God may give us something even better than what we asked for. It also teaches us to always make dua when visiting those who are ill or have passed away as it can bring blessings from God upon them.
