Sahih Muslim 822e (Book 6, Hadith 340) #9065
Reciting Surahs in Prayer

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Mas'ud disapproved of a man's recitation of multiple surahs in one rak'ah, saying it was like reciting poetry. He then described the way the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to recite two surahs in one rak'ah.

Shaqiq reported: A person from Banu Bajila who was called Nabik b. Sinan came to Abdullah and said: I recite mufassal surahs in one rak'ah. Upon this 'Abdullah said: (You recite) like the recitation of poetry. I know the manner in which the Messenger of Allah recited two surahs in one rak'ah.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how to recite surahs during prayer. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud disapproved of a man’s recitation of multiple surahs in one rak’ah, saying it was like reciting poetry. He then described the way the Prophet Muhammad used to recite two surahs in one rak’ah. This teaches us that we should be careful when we are praying and make sure that we are following the correct manner as taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH and not just do whatever we want or think is right without consulting religious scholars or learning from authentic sources first. We should also take care not to rush through our prayers but rather take time to properly focus on each part and understand its meaning so that our prayers can be accepted by Allah SWT.
