Sahih Muslim 815a (Book 6, Hadith 322) #9047
Justified Envy

SUMMARY: Envy is only justified in two cases, one who has been given knowledge of the Quran and acts upon it, and another who has been given wealth by God and spends it for the welfare of others.

Salim narrated on the authority of his father (Ibn 'Umar) that the Messenger of Allah said: Envy is not justified but in case of two persons only: one who, having been given (knowledge of) the Qur'an by Allah, recites it during the night and day (and also acts upon it) and a man who, having been given wealth by God, spends it during the night and the day (for the welfare of others. seeking the pleasure of the Lord).

QUICK LESSONS:
Recite Qur’an regularly & act upon its teachings; Spend your wealth for good causes; Be content with what you have; Help those in need; Seek pleasure from God through your actions.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about envy or jealousy which is a feeling that arises when someone else has something that we want or have. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that envy is only justified in two cases; one who has been given knowledge of the Quran by Allah and recites it during day and night, as well as acts upon its teachings. The other case is a person who has been blessed with wealth from Allah, but instead of hoarding it for himself he spends it during day and night to help others seeking pleasure from Allah. This hadith teaches us to be content with what we have, not to be jealous or envious when someone else gets something we don't have because Allah will reward us if we are patient with our situation. We should also use whatever resources we have to help those in need so that our actions can please Allah SWT.
