Sahih Muslim 815b (Book 6, Hadith 323) #9048
Justified Envy

SUMMARY: Envy is only justified in two cases, one who has been given knowledge of the Quran and recites it and acts upon it, and another who has been given wealth by God and gives it in charity.

Salim son of Abdullah b. 'Umar is reported to have said on the authority of his father that the Messenger of Allah observed: Envy is not justified but in case of two persons only: one who, having been given (knowledge of) the Qur'an by Allah, recites it during the night and during the day (and acts upon it), and the person who, having been given wealth by God, gives it in charity during the night and the day.

QUICK LESSONS:
Use your blessings from Allah in a way that pleases Him so that your envy may be justified as well .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that envy is not usually a good thing, but there are two exceptions to this rule. The first exception is for someone who has been blessed with knowledge of the Quran. If they use this knowledge to recite the Quran during both day and night, then their envy can be justified. The second exception is for someone who has been blessed with wealth from Allah. If they use this wealth to give charity during both day and night, then their envy can also be justified. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to use our blessings from Allah in a way that pleases Him so that our envy may be justified as well.
