Sahih Muslim 674a (Book 5, Hadith 368) #8679
Teaching Beliefs & Practices of Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised a group of young men to go back to their families and teach them the beliefs and practices of Islam, while also exhorting them to do good. He also instructed that one of them should call the Adhan for prayer and the oldest among them should lead it.

Malik b. Huwairith reported: We came to the Messenger of Allah and we were all young men of nearly equal age. We stayed with him (the Holy Prophet) for twenty nights, and as the Messenger of Allah was extremely kind and tender of heart, he therefore, thought that we were eager (to see) our family (we felt homesick). So he asked us about the members of the family that we had left behind and when we informed him, he said: Go back to your family, stay with them, and teach them (beliefs and practices of Islam) and exhort them to good, and when the time for prayer comes, one amongst you should announce Adhan and then the oldest among you should lead the prayer.

QUICK LESSONS:
Spread knowledge about religion, Be kind-hearted towards those around you who may be feeling homesick or lonely

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about teaching others about the beliefs and practices of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was very kind-hearted and understanding towards a group of young men who were feeling homesick. He asked about their families, then advised them to go back home and teach their family members about Islamic beliefs and practices as well as exhort them to do good deeds. He further instructed that one amongst them should call out the Adhan for prayer time, while the oldest amongst them should lead it. This hadith teaches us that we must spread knowledge about our religion in order for others to benefit from it too, as well as encouraging us all to be kind-hearted towards those around us who may be feeling homesick or lonely. It also reminds us that we must always strive for excellence in our religious duties such as leading prayers or calling out the Adhan by entrusting these tasks with those who are most knowledgeable or experienced in doing so.
