Sahih Muslim 274d (Book 2, Hadith 96) #7800
How to Perform Ablution for Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was on a journey and demonstrated how to perform ablution for prayer.

Mughira b. Shu'ba reported: I was in the company of the Messenger of Allah on a journey when he said: Mughira take hold of this jar (of water). I took hold of it and I went out with him. (I stopped but) the Messenger of Allah proceeded on till he was out of my sight. He relieved himself and then came back and he was wearing a tight-sleeved Syrian gown. He tried to get his forearms out. but the sleeve of the gown was very narrow, so he brought his hands out from under the gown. I poured water over (his hands) and he performed ablution for prayer, then wiped over his socks and prayed.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's demonstration of how to perform ablution for prayer while on a journey. It is narrated by Mughira b. Shu'ba who was in the company of the Prophet during this journey. The Prophet asked Mughira to take hold of a jar of water and proceeded ahead until he was out of sight. He then relieved himself and came back wearing a tight-sleeved Syrian gown which made it difficult for him to get his forearms out from under it in order to perform ablution with water. Instead, he wiped over his socks as an alternative way of performing ablution before praying. This hadith teaches us that when we are on a journey, we can use an alternative method such as wiping over our socks instead of using water if it is not available or if we are unable to use it due to certain circumstances such as clothing restrictions or physical limitations etc..
