Sahih Muslim 272a (Book 2, Hadith 89) #7793
Wiping Over Shoes After Ablution

SUMMARY: This hadith is about Jarir, a newly converted Muslim, who saw the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) perform ablution and wipe over his shoes after urinating.

Hummam reported: Jarir urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over the socks. It was said to him: Do you do like this? He said: Yes, I saw that the Messenger of Allah urinated, then performed ablution and then wiped over his shoes. A'mash said: Ibrahim had observed that this hadith was a surprise for them (the people) because Jarir had embraced Islam after the revelation of Surat al-Ma'ida.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH in all aspects including religious practices such as performing ablutions correctly according to Islamic teachings & traditions so that we can gain Allah’s blessings in this life and hereafter .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of performing ablution and wiping over his shoes after urinating. It was a surprise to people because Jarir had only recently embraced Islam after the revelation of Surat al-Ma'ida. The act of wiping over one's shoes is an important part of Islamic ritual purification known as wudu or ablution which must be performed before prayer or other acts of worship in Islam. The act involves washing certain parts of the body with water such as hands, face, arms up to elbows, feet up to ankles and wiping one's head with wet hands. After this process has been completed it is permissible for Muslims to wipe their socks or shoes instead of washing them if they are wearing them at the time they need to perform wudu again within 24 hours since their last wudu was performed. This hadith teaches us that we should follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH in all aspects including religious practices such as performing ablutions correctly according to Islamic teachings and traditions so that we can gain Allah’s blessings in this life and hereafter.
