The Importance of Praying Correctly

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of praying correctly and with full concentration.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger entered the mosque and a person followed him. The man prayed and went to the Prophet and greeted him. The Prophet returned the greeting and said to him, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed". The man went back prayed in the same way as before, returned and greeted the Prophet who said, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed". This happened thrice. The man said, "By Him Who sent you with the Truth, I cannot offer the prayer in a better way than this. Please, teach me how to pray". The Prophet said, "When you stand for Prayer say Takbir and then recite from the Holy Qur'an (of what you know by heart) and then bow till you feel at ease. Then raise your head and stand up straight, then prostrate till you feel at ease during your prostration, then sit with calmness till you feel at ease (do not hurry) and do the same in all your prayers.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of prayer in Islam. It was narrated by Abu Huraira that Prophet Muhammad entered a mosque and saw a man praying. After he finished, the Prophet asked him to pray again as he did not do it correctly. The man repeated his prayer three times but still could not get it right, so he asked the Prophet to teach him how to pray properly. The Prophet then instructed him on how to perform prayer with full concentration and reciting from the Quran what one knows by heart before bowing down in prostration until one feels at ease, then standing up straight and prostrating again until one feels at ease during prostration before sitting calmly till one feels at ease without hurrying through any part of it. This hadith teaches us that we should take our time while performing prayers and focus on every step with full concentration so that we can reap its benefits fully as prescribed by Allah SWT in His book - Quran - which is also recited during prayers for spiritual nourishment.
