Sahih Muslim 16c (Book 1, Hadith 21) #7286
The Five Pillars of Islam

SUMMARY: The essence of this hadith is that the foundation of Islam is built on five pillars, which are testifying to the oneness of Allah, believing in Muhammad as His messenger, establishing prayer, paying Zakat (charity), performing Hajj (pilgrimage) and fasting during Ramadan.

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah son of 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah said: (The superstructure of) al-Islam is raised on five (pillars), testifying (the fact) that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is His bondsman and messenger, and the establishment of prayer, payment of Zakat, Pilgrimage to the House (Ka'ba) and the fast of Ramadan.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the five pillars upon which Islam stands. These are testifying to the oneness of Allah by saying “there is no god but Allah”; believing in Prophet Muhammad as His messenger; establishing prayer; paying Zakat or charity; performing Hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime if one can afford it; and fasting during Ramadan. These five pillars are essential for Muslims and form an integral part of their faith. They help Muslims stay connected with God and remember Him throughout their lives. By following these practices, Muslims learn how to be humble before God and how to be generous towards others who may not have as much as they do. Additionally, these practices also help them become better people by teaching them patience, discipline and self-control.
