Sahih Muslim 16b (Book 1, Hadith 20) #7285
The Five Pillars of Islam

SUMMARY: The five pillars of Islam are worshipping Allah alone, establishing prayer, paying Zakat, performing Hajj and fasting during Ramadan.

It is narrated on the authority of ('Abdullah) son of 'Umar, that the Prophet (may peace of Allah be upon him) said: (The superstructure of) al-Islam is raised on five (pillars), i. e. Allah (alone) should be worshipped, and (all other gods) beside Him should be (categorically) denied. Establishment of prayer, the payment of Zakat, Pilgrimage to the House, and the fast of Ramadan (are the other obligatory acts besides the belief in the oneness of Allah and denial of all other gods).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the five pillars of Islam which are essential for a Muslim's faith. These five pillars are worshipping Allah alone, establishing prayer, paying Zakat, performing Hajj and fasting during Ramadan. Worshipping Allah alone means that no other gods should be worshipped besides Him. Establishing prayer means to pray five times a day at specific times throughout the day. Paying Zakat is an obligatory charity given to those in need from one's wealth or possessions. Performing Hajj is an annual pilgrimage to Makkah that Muslims must do at least once in their lifetime if they can afford it financially and physically. Lastly, fasting during Ramadan is abstaining from food and drink from dawn until sunset for the entire month of Ramadan each year as an act of worship towards Allah Almighty. All these acts together form the foundation upon which a Muslim's faith stands on and it is important for every Muslim to practice them in order to stay true to their faith as well as gain rewards from Allah Almighty both in this world and hereafter Insha'Allah!
