The Revelation of Verse 5:3

SUMMARY: Umar, the second Caliph of Islam, was told by a Jew that if the verse 5:3 had been revealed to them, they would have taken that day as an 'Id (festival) day. Umar then informed him that this verse was revealed on the day of 'Arafat, which is a Friday.

Narrated Tariq bin Shihab: A Jew said to 'Umar, "O Chief of the Believers, if this verse: 'This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favors upon you, and have chosen for you, Islam as your religion'. (5:3) had been revealed upon us, we would have taken that day as an 'Id (festival) day"'.Umar said, "I know definitely on what day this Verse was revealed; it was revealed on the day of 'Arafat, on a Friday".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the revelation of one of the most important verses in Islam - Verse 5:3 . This verse is found in Surah Al-Ma’idah and it states “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favors upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”. According to this hadith narrated by Tariq bin Shihab, a Jew asked Umar ibn al-Khattab when this verse was revealed and he replied that it was revealed on the Day of Arafat which is also known as Friday.
