Sahih al-Bukhari 7148 (Book 93, Hadith 12) #6867
The Dangers of Desiring Power and Authority

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ warned people against the desire for power and authority, as it will be a source of regret on the Day of Resurrection.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "You people will be keen to have the authority of ruling which will be a thing of regret for you on the Day of Resurrection. What an excellent wet nurse it is, yet what a bad weaning one it is!"

QUICK LESSONS:
Do not seek after power or authority too much; use it responsibly if you have it; focus your efforts on doing good deeds instead; strive for moderation and contentment with what you have been given by Allah SWT .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns us against desiring power and authority. It is narrated by Abu Huraira that the Prophet said that people will be keen to have the authority of ruling which will be a thing of regret for them on the Day of Resurrection. He likened this desire to a wet nurse who provides nourishment but also weans away from her milk when it is time. This means that while power and authority can provide comfort in this life, it can also lead to regret in the hereafter if not used properly. Therefore we should not seek after these things too much or become attached to them as they are fleeting in nature. Instead we should focus our efforts on doing good deeds so that we may receive Allah's mercy in both worlds.
