Sahih al-Bukhari 7147 (Book 93, Hadith 11) #6866
Seeking Authority & Making Expiation

SUMMARY: It is better to not seek authority, but if it is given to you without asking for it, Allah will help you in it. If you make an oath and later find something better, do what is better and make expiation for your oath.

Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin Samura: Allah's Messenger said, "O 'Abdur-Rahman bin Samura! Do not seek to be a ruler, for if you are given authority on your demand, you will be held responsible for it, but if you are given it without asking for it, then you will be helped (by Allah) in it. If you ever take an oath to do something and later on you find that something else is better, then do what is better and make expiation for your oath".

QUICK LESSONS:
Do not seek positions of power/authority; Fulfill your promises with sincerity & honesty; Do what is best according to Islamic teachings at all times; Accept positions of power/authority with humility when given without asking for it .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the importance of not seeking authority or power. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned 'Abdur-Rahman bin Samura that if he seeks authority or power, he will be held responsible for his actions while in office. However, if he was given the position without asking for it then Allah would help him in his duties. Additionally, the Prophet ﷺ also taught that if one makes an oath to do something and later finds something else which is better than what they promised then they should do what is best and make expiation for their oath. This hadith teaches us that we should not seek positions of power as we may be held accountable by Allah SWT but also reminds us of our responsibility towards fulfilling our promises even when there are more beneficial options available to us. We must always strive to fulfill our promises with sincerity and honesty while making sure that we are doing what is best according to Islamic teachings at all times.
